Who are the “blazers”?
Past History 1972-1985:
1972 – Despite being from Bellingham, WA, the Bellingham Blazers in the 1970s had their playoffs in Langley, British Columbia as members of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League. However, the Blazers still competed in Bellingham during their regular season.
1975 – Continuing to play in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, the team won their first championship. The Blazers went on to win the Nat Bailey Cup against the Kelowna Buckaroos 4-2 (games) in addition to moving on to the British Columbia Junior A Championship and winning the Mowat Cup against the Coquitlam Comets 2-0. However, the team was defeated by the Spruce Grove Mets ending their season 2-4.
1975-1977 – After the championship, the Blazers moved to Maple Ridge for a brief amount of time; however, they returned back to Bellingham in 1976. The British Columbia Hockey League placed a replacement team in Maple Ridge due to the vacancy. While in Maple Ridge, they were named the Maple Ridge Blazers.
1979 – After renaming the Blazers the Ice Hawks, the team won the British Columbia Junior League Title against the Kamloop Rockets 4-0. However, due to the Bellingham Blazers’ participation in home games in the United States, they were banned by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association from continuing their national play.
1980-1985 – The Blazers continued to play games in the BCJHL, and changed their name twice — first to the Vancouver Blue Hawks, and then to the Burnaby Blue Hawks. The team dissolved in 1985 only to be re-founded in 2012.
Modern History 2012-Present:
2012-2015 – Junior Hockey came back to Bellingham when Whatcom Sports and Recreation teamed up with Rod and Mark Collins. This partnership brought back the Bellingham Blazers. The Blazers name was chosen to honor the team’s past success and to bring that success with them as they began their journey as a new team. The Blazers did just that in 2012, winning the Cascade Cup, and winning it again in 2013 in the Northern Pacific Hockey League. In 2014 and 2015, the team won the semifinals but lost in the finals.
2016-2018 – After competing in the Northern Pacific League, the Bellingham Blazers moved on to the Western States Hockey League in 2016. In 2018, while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the league, the Blazers captured their first Northwest Division Championship and made their first appearance in the WSHL’s Thorne Cup National Championship!
2022 – USPHL – The Bellingham Blazers join the United States Premier Hockey League. Along with Seattle Totems, Bellingham Blazers, Vernal Oilers, Rock Springs Prospectors and Rogue Valley Royals, these five teams have formed the Northwest Division In USPHL Premier.
